What is Reiki?
Healing by touch. A basic physical connection, that everyone wants to do and be done to them when they are unwell, with the addition of the power and energy of the Universe at your disposal.
Reiki, which is pronounced ray – key, is a technique of energy transfer from one individual to another, which came to the West from Japan , and is a technique founded in ancient Eastern practices, which is approved for use in hospitals for relaxation and refreshment of the mind and body, encouraging health and well being.
It is also a method of personal development, as those that move on to Reiki Mastery will find.
The technique is attributed to Dr. Mikao Usui, ( see Reiki History ), who developed it at the beginning of the 20th century after much study of Eastern healing methods, and meditation on the sacred Mount Karuma, near Osaka, Japan.
Reiki is derived from two Japanese words, Rei, ( the top character below ), meaning Universal or spiritual, and Kei ( the lower character ), which is the Life Force. The characters, or Kanji, are written here in the modern Kaisho style.

The Universal Energy that surrounds us all, and indeed passes through us, and through time, is just being understood by scientists.

" Ki is the basic unit of the universe.
It is the infinite gathering of infinitely small particles.
Everything is ultimately composed of Ki.
If you pursue this concept to the depth of human Consciousness, you will understand the universal mind which governs all creation, loving and protecting life…
Everything originates from Ki.”
( excerpt from Book of Ki by Koichi Tohei )
In Chinese Reiki is called Ling chi, though using the same two characters, or Kanji.
“ Ling Chi is the subtlest and most highly refined of all the energies in the human system and the product of the most advanced stages of practice, whereby the ordinary energies of the body are transformed into pure spiritual vitality. This type of highly refined energy enhances spiritual awareness, improves all cerebral functions, and constitutes the basic fuel for the highest level of spiritual work.
( excerpt from Chi-gung: Harnessing the power of the Universe by Daniel Reid )
When the Healer is ‘attuned’ the energy channels within them are opened to allow the flow of energy through them into the Client. The healer is simply a channel through which the energy flows.
When the hands are placed, and the intent of the Healer is that Reiki flows, then, Ki is drawn from the Universe into the Client, or into the Healer themselves if they are self healing.
As part of the preparation for healing the Healer should ‘self heal’ for at least 40 minutes each day, a time that may also be taken for meditation, to further aid the flow of Ki.
The Client, whether sitting, or laying, ( Dr Usui originally used the sitting position for his Clients ), will experience a period of quiet as the practitioner moves from one hand position to the next. The hands may be placed on, or just above the body. No clothing is removed. The Client may experience the flow of Reiki into their body, though this experience is very individual, and varies from one person to the next. There may be twitching movements, and minor spasms, and the Client may see bright colours, or feel a sense of movement.
Reiki does not need guiding by the Healer, it flows to the points it is needed through the physical body, and around the body in the aura, nourishing the organs and cells of the body, breaking down blockages that have impeded the flow of Ki. A treatment may involve the local treatment of specific areas the Healer views as helpful, followed by a more general treatment, and stimulation of the Chakras.
The Aura
As you may know, around every living human there is an energy field, known as the Aura, a field that goes when we die. Some may be able to see this, most can feel it, and it can now be photographed, as below:
Much of the energy of the Aura is supplied by the Chakras.

The Chakras
The Chakras ( the name coming from the Sanskrit word meaning ‘wheel of energy’ ) are positions in the human body where there are nexus of nerve endings, and resulting high energy peaks, which can be seen as colours by some, and felt by most people when scanning ( q.v. ). There are seven that are popularly taught, ( though there are more ) with the colours following the colours of the rainbow from base or Tribal position to the Crown.
The Seven main Chakra positions and colours

One of the key routines for any Reiki practitioner, and for their Clients, is the balancing of the Chakras, which will be covered later in this manual ( p xx ).
Each Chakra operates at a different frequency.
Crown 172.06 Hz
Third Eye 221.23 Hz
Throat 141.27 Hz
Heart 136.10 Hz ( the vibration of Om )
Solar Plexus 126.22 Hz
Sacral 210.42 Hz
Root 194.18 Hz
And may also be stimulated by placing appropriate tuning forks on them.
Linked to the Chakras are the Meridians, which follow the main acupuncture, from traditional Chinese medicine, and show the main flows of energy through the body.
It is believed that Reiki uses the Meridians to transmit energy around the body, so that it may be available to the organs as necessary.
By balancing the Chakras, the whole body energy system is balanced, but, like acupuncture, this is a continuing process, and needs to be kept up regularly, ( 40 minutes per day ). This should be done after any areas of dis-ease have been dealt with as will be described in later chapters.
The colours of the Aura are not in the same positions as the Chakras, but reflect the key, or dominant forces in the person. Thus a person who is physically well will tend to have a more orange Aura, and healing ability would add green.
It MUST BE EMPHASISED that any treatments for a physical or psychological condition must be under the supervision of a Qualified medical practitioner, psychologist, or other health care professional.
Kirilian Photography ( picturing the energy flow from the body )
Is named after Semyon Kirlian, who in 1939 accidentally discovered that if an object on a photographic plate is connected to a source of high voltage, small corona discharges (created by the strong electric field at the edges of the object) create an image on the plate.
Photographs using the technique may be seen at : http://www.synergy-co.com/pages/kirlianphotos.html
The main point of interest in Kirlian photography for Reiki Healers is the difference seen in the conduction of the high voltage energy by a healer, particularly after meditating, compared to the clients.
Positive Thinking & Outcomes
The sub-conscious human mind does not recognise the word ‘not’. ‘Not’ is a construct of language, not of the mind. In fact to get to ‘Not’ something, the mind always has to think of the something first.
Let’s check that out:
Don’t think of a car
Don’t think of a red car
Just don’t think of the colour purple
And so on: the mind has to think of each thing in order to ‘not think’ about it. Now this a good tip when you’re talking to children or managing people ( Don’t do xyz, and they’re mind will negate the ‘not’ and they’ll probably do it ! ), but it also shows that positive statements will work on the mind. So whenever working with clients, or self healing, always look to the Outcome you want to achieve.
Ask the Client how they want to be; get them to visualise, see, hear, feel how they will be when they are better, and aim for that. Always think in positives.
The Attunement
The attunements are one of the most fulfilling and memorable events for any student of Reiki, especially when carried out at a place that is special for them, or at a sacred site where the additional power of the site and the sense of occasion can be quite overwhelming.
Reiki is usually divided into three degrees ( with the occasional inclusion of an additional ‘Healing’ course by some practitioners ). The first two degrees are frequently taught together, in the West, in a three day practical course, with the third, Master/Teacher attunement following at least a year later, once the initial attunements have had time to adjust the system.
The Reiki master acts as a channel allowing the energy to flow into the student, where it may start a process of cleansing of both the physical and mental body. As a result toxins that have been stored away in the body may be released.
There are many reports from those who have been attuned of the attendance or their guides and other spirits to assist them in their passage, as well as the presence of ascended masters.
The attunement may also increase psychic awareness with visions, and past-life experiences easier to access.
These changes are unique to each individual. Reiki is for life. Although you may receive further attunements from other Reiki Masters and trainers, your initial attunements will enable you to progress as a Reiki Healer without further attunement for the rest of your days.
As a Healer you will no doubt be practicing on both yourself and on others. When you do this it is important to know that when practiced correctly Reiki takes no energy from you, you are the channel through which it flows, and if anything it will leave a residue of additional energy in you as it passes.
Reiki of itself does not cause any harm, but as noted above:
It MUST BE EMPHASISED that any treatments for a physical or psychological condition must be under the supervision of a Qualified medical practitioner, psychologist, or other health care professional.
Anyone can learn Reiki. It does not take years of practice, or vast amounts of studying. It is not religious in its outlook, but does enable both the healer and the client to be connected directly to the energy of the greater universe.
Welcome to your destiny
